Dr Pepper is wholly owned by Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. (NASDAQ: KDP), a widely held public company headquartered in Frisco, Texas, and that remains true as of September 2026. What has changed is that KDP is separating into two companies, and Dr Pepper is going to the beverage half, away from Keurig.
The 2018 merger that created Keurig Dr Pepper is being unwound. After buying the Dutch coffee group JDE Peet's in April 2026, KDP announced it will split into a global coffee company and a North American refreshment beverage company. Dr Pepper, 7UP, Canada Dry and Snapple go to the beverage side. Keurig goes to the coffee side.

Key takeaways
- Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. owns Dr Pepper outright. No Coca-Cola stake, no PepsiCo stake, no founding family.
- KDP is splitting in two. The acquisition of JDE Peet's N.V. closed in April 2026, and a planned tax-free separation will create "Global Coffee Co." and "Beverage Co." Dr Pepper goes to Beverage Co.
- JAB Holding, the anchor shareholder from the 2018 merger, is gone. The 2026 proxy states JAB BevCo B.V. "was a more than 5% stockholder of KDP until May 5, 2025."
- JAB then sold KDP its coffee business. A JAB affiliate, Acorn Holdings B.V., was the lead seller of JDE Peet's, in a group holding 69% of the voting power.
- Mondelez International no longer holds a reportable stake. It does not appear anywhere in the 2026 proxy. Older articles saying Mondelez "retains a strategic minority stake" are out of date.
- The largest holders are now index and active funds, led by FMR LLC (Fidelity) at 10.0%. No shareholder controls the company.
- Pro forma net sales after the JDE Peet's deal are about $28 billion.
This article is based on primary sources: Keurig Dr Pepper Inc.'s DEF 14A proxy statement filed with the SEC on April 24, 2026 (CIK 0001418135), including its beneficial ownership table as of the April 20, 2026 record date and its related person transactions disclosure; and Keurig Dr Pepper's press release of August 25, 2025 announcing the JDE Peet's acquisition and the planned separation. Where a figure comes from press reporting rather than a filing, I say so. Full source list at the bottom.
Who owns Dr Pepper right now?
Dr Pepper is a wholly owned brand of Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. There is no partial stake held by a rival, no joint venture and no licensing anomaly in its home market.
| Layer | Owner | Control |
|---|---|---|
| Dr Pepper (brand) | Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. | 100% |
| Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. | Public shareholders, NASDAQ: KDP | Dispersed. No controlling holder |
The question that actually has an interesting answer is who owns KDP. Here is the beneficial ownership table from the April 2026 proxy, measured as of the April 20, 2026 record date.
| Holder of more than 5% | Shares | Percent of class |
|---|---|---|
| FMR LLC (Fidelity) | 135,874,927 | 10.0% |
| Capital World Investors | 99,479,243 | 7.3% |
| BlackRock, Inc. | 93,075,153 | 6.8% |
| Harris Associates LP | 86,269,175 | 6.3% |
Two absences matter more than the names present.
Mondelez International is not there. Mondelez received KDP stock in the 2018 merger through its stake in Keurig Green Mountain, and many articles still describe it as holding a strategic minority position. It does not appear in the 2026 proxy at all, which means it is not a holder of more than 5%. I have corrected this article accordingly.
Vanguard is not there either, which is unusual for a company this size. The proxy explains why: on March 27, 2026, Vanguard reported that after an internal realignment on January 12, 2026, it no longer holds or is deemed to hold beneficial ownership over securities held by its various subsidiaries, which now report separately. That is a reporting change, not a sale.
The JAB Holding story, and why it is the real answer
For most of KDP's life, the honest answer to "who controls this company" was JAB Holding, the private investment vehicle associated with Germany's Reimann family. This is the part missing from almost every article on Dr Pepper ownership, including the earlier version of this one.
JAB took Keurig Green Mountain private in 2016. In 2018 it merged Keurig with Dr Pepper Snapple Group and emerged as KDP's anchor shareholder with roughly a third of the company. That stake, not the public float, was the thing that actually decided KDP's direction.
Then JAB left. The 2026 proxy puts a precise date on it, in the related person transactions section rather than the ownership table: JAB BevCo B.V. "was a more than 5% stockholder of KDP until May 5, 2025."
The same disclosure explains why this was ever a governance issue. While JAB was a large holder, KDP had commercial arrangements with businesses JAB controlled or significantly owned: Peet's Coffee & Tea, Krispy Kreme, and Panera Brands including Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros Bagels. KDP licenses the Caribou and Krispy Kreme trademarks for Keurig portion packs, and sold syrups and packaged beverages to those chains. Those are related party transactions precisely because the same investor sat on both sides.
And then the arc closes in a way almost nobody has noticed. In August 2025 KDP agreed to buy JDE Peet's N.V., the Dutch coffee group. The seller was Acorn Holdings B.V., a JAB affiliate, in a group that held 69% of JDE Peet's voting power. The deal closed on April 1, 2026 at €31.85 per share, valuing JDE Peet's at roughly €15.7 billion.
So JAB sold out of KDP, and then sold KDP its coffee company. The proceeds of that sale, and the debt KDP took on to fund it, are what set up the split that now separates Dr Pepper from Keurig.
Is Dr Pepper a 7UP product?
No. Neither one owns the other. They are sibling brands with the same parent.
Dr Pepper and 7UP are both owned by Keurig Dr Pepper in the United States, which is why they turn up in the same coolers, the same vending machines and the same distribution contracts. That shared shelf presence is what makes people assume one is a line extension of the other. It is not: Dr Pepper dates to 1885 in Waco, Texas, and 7UP was created in 1929, and they arrived under the same corporate roof through decades of separate acquisitions.
One important wrinkle, because it is the single biggest source of confusion in this category: 7UP's ownership is split by geography. Keurig Dr Pepper owns 7UP in the United States. Outside the US, the 7UP trademark belongs to PepsiCo. So "is 7UP a Pepsi product" has two correct answers depending on which country you are standing in. Dr Pepper has a similar international split, with Coca-Cola holding distribution rights in some markets. Distribution and trademark licensing are not ownership, and conflating them is where most of the internet goes wrong on this topic.
The portfolio, and where each brand is going
KDP's brands are about to be divided between two companies. This table is the useful version, because it tells you not just what KDP owns but which company will own it after the separation.
| Brand | Category | Destination after the split |
|---|---|---|
| Dr Pepper | Carbonated soft drinks | Beverage Co. |
| 7UP (US rights) | Lemon-lime soda | Beverage Co. |
| Canada Dry | Ginger ale and mixers | Beverage Co. |
| Snapple | Ready to drink tea | Beverage Co. |
| Mott's | Juice and apple sauce | Beverage Co. |
| Keurig | Brewing systems and pods | Global Coffee Co. |
| JDE Peet's brands (Jacobs, Douwe Egberts, Peet's, L'OR) | Coffee | Global Coffee Co. |
The 2018 logic was that combining coffee hardware with cold beverages produced distribution leverage. The 2026 logic is the opposite: that the two businesses want different capital allocation, different growth strategies and different cultures. KDP's proxy describes creating "two advantaged, pure-play companies."
For Dr Pepper specifically, this means its parent is about to get smaller and more focused. It stops being one brand inside a hybrid coffee-and-soda conglomerate and becomes a flagship brand of a dedicated North American beverage company.

What changed in the last 18 months
As of September 2026, the separation is still on track for early 2027, and the beverage company that will hold Dr Pepper is being built out. Tim Cofer is set to run it as chief executive, with Sudhanshu Priyadarshi named its chief financial officer effective July 7, 2026, per Keurig Dr Pepper's June 23, 2026 leadership announcement. The two future companies have not been given final names yet, so the working labels Beverage Co. and Global Coffee Co. remain placeholders. In September 2026, Bank of America added KDP to its US 1 list of high-conviction stocks, citing the value it expects the split to unlock.
Beyond the split itself, the leadership around Dr Pepper has turned over almost completely, and older articles have this wrong.
- Anthony DiSilvestro was appointed Chief Financial Officer in late 2025. Sudhanshu Priyadarshi, named as CFO in most existing coverage, no longer holds that role.
- Robert Gamgort stepped off the Board after a decade, most recently as Chair. KDP is transitioning to an independent Chair.
- Rafael Oliveira was named CEO of the Coffee Operating Unit in April 2026 and will lead Global Coffee Co. He had been JDE Peet's CEO since November 2024.
- Tim Cofer remains CEO of KDP and is set to lead Beverage Co.
- Two new independent directors joined in early 2026: Bill Newlands, former CEO of Constellation Brands, and Amie Thuener, former Alphabet controller, who has since been named incoming CFO of Broadcom and was not renominated.
- KDP now runs dedicated Beverage and Coffee Operating Units ahead of the separation.
Debunking the misconception
The most persistent myth is that Coca-Cola or PepsiCo owns Dr Pepper. The reason it survives is real: in some international markets Coca-Cola bottles and distributes Dr Pepper, and Pepsi bottlers have historically handled it in parts of the US.
Those are logistics agreements. A bottler buys concentrate, manufactures, and distributes under contract. It does not own the trademark, set the brand strategy or collect the brand's profit. Dr Pepper's concentrate economics flow to Keurig Dr Pepper, and after the separation they will flow to Beverage Co.
The second myth is that Dr Pepper is a cola. It is not marketed as one, and its 23-flavour formulation predates Coca-Cola's national expansion. Dr Pepper is generally considered the oldest major soft drink brand still sold in the United States.
