Before OpenAI: the engineer before OpenAI
Forbes’s biography records Brockman leaving Harvard and MIT before joining Stripe in 2010. It identifies his CTO appointment in 2013 and departure in 2015. The relevant financial lesson is the transition from helping build one private company to founding another. Neither position discloses his complete balance sheet.
His own dated posts provide a contemporaneous account of engineering priorities. The archive includes his January 2017 discussion of the OpenAI CTO role and an earlier interest in programming languages. Unlike a retrospective net-worth list, these posts show what he was trying to build before today’s valuation debate.
A technical leadership title can describe management, architecture or direct implementation. Brockman’s writing emphasizes making other builders effective. That distinction matters when assessing a founder’s contribution. A large holding can reward organizational work accumulated over years, even when public attention concentrates on a particular product launch.
OpenAI: the research organization and the capital problem
The blog archive includes a March 2019 mission post co-written with Ilya Sutskever. It discusses a changed legal structure intended to raise more capital. This is a first-person account, so we treat the rationale as the founders’ explanation rather than an independent verdict on the structure.
My read: capital formation is central to Brockman’s financial story. A research organization can need resources long before it produces revenue. Changing how investors participate can alter the relationship among mission, governance and economic claims. A reader cannot infer those claims merely from the organization’s original nonprofit description.
A founder’s estimated fortune should therefore be matched to the specific legal and economic interest being valued. A nonprofit role, a commercial shareholding and a contractual profit participation are not interchangeable. Historical structures also should not be assumed to survive later reorganizations without reviewing the applicable records.
OpenAI: what the Forbes number establishes
The current Forbes profile identifies him as cofounder and president in its editorial text. Its header still uses a CTO label. I use the editorial description while recording the inconsistency. The page’s wealth timestamp and biography-update timestamp are different fields.
The estimate supplies a dated third-party observation. It does not give us an audited asset-and-liability schedule or prove that the holding can be sold at that value. Private securities can have transfer restrictions, preferences and a limited pool of buyers. Those considerations affect how a paper fortune differs from immediately available funds.
My calculation: we retain the $25.5 billion observation without combining it with an assumed Stripe stake. Adding another privately estimated asset could double count something already included by Forbes. A reliable reconstruction would need the provider’s asset-level methodology and a dated ownership record for each material holding.

OpenAI: the $30 billion testimony and the $25.5 billion estimate
Associated Press’s May 4, 2026 court report says Brockman described his OpenAI stake as worth nearly $30 billion. AP reported an $852 billion company valuation. This is reporting of testimony, rather than our inspection of the original transcript. It concerns one stake at that date, not a complete current personal balance sheet.
My calculation: using $30 billion as an approximate comparison point, the difference from Forbes’s $25.5 billion total is $4.5 billion, or 15%. Dividing $30 billion by $852 billion gives about 3.52%. Neither calculation proves a valuation haircut or an ownership percentage. The inputs have different dates and scopes, and “nearly” supplies additional imprecision. The arithmetic measures the gap without inventing its cause.
The December 2015 founding announcement named Brockman CTO and described $1 billion of donor commitments. Commitments are not cash received or spent. OpenAI’s May 2022 announcement made him president. Those records show organizational change, but do not disclose when or how his current economic interest was awarded.
The comparison is useful beside Ilya Sutskever’s profile. A disclosure about an OpenAI holding does not establish every other asset. Separate companies, security rights and provider methods must be traced separately. A reported stake and a provider’s personal total can both be meaningful without being interchangeable.
Greg Brockman net worth in 2026
Forbes estimates Greg Brockman net worth at $25.5 billion as of October 12, 2026. Its profile attributes his wealth principally to OpenAI and describes an estimated ownership range. I do not average those figures or derive a supposedly exact stake by dividing total wealth by OpenAI’s company valuation. A September 2026 Forbes report also estimated $25.5 billion. The reviewed historical total starts there; the earlier OpenAI stake testimony is excluded from this total-wealth series.

I compare dated personal estimates in the table above. Dates identify valuations, report publication, or our source observation, as labeled. Bars are equally spaced observations, not continuous calendar intervals. Figures are nominal USD; private holdings may be illiquid. I do not interpolate gaps, infer founder stakes, or count company funding as personal wealth.

Questions about Greg Brockman
What is Greg Brockman’s net worth?
Forbes estimates $25.5B on 2026-10-12. This dated personal estimate is separate from the company’s valuation and is not an audited balance sheet.
How did Greg Brockman make his money?
The reviewed Forbes profile attributes his wealth principally to OpenAI. His earlier career included Stripe, where he became CTO. The founding announcement identifies his role but does not disclose when or how his current economic interest was awarded.
How much equity does Greg Brockman have?
Forbes estimates an ownership range of about 2.5% to 3%. AP separately reported testimony valuing his OpenAI stake at nearly $30 billion. Neither gives us a current, independently reconciled share register.
Was the nearly $30 billion testimony his net worth?
AP reported a value for his OpenAI stake. That scope differs from a total personal wealth estimate. I have reviewed the report, not the original court transcript, and do not add the holding value to Forbes’s total.
How I researched Greg Brockman
I conducted independent research into Brockman’s dated blog archive and the current Forbes profile. I separate a first-person account of strategy from a third-party wealth estimate. I did not locate and review the relevant trial transcript, so an exact testimony reconciliation remains excluded.
