Who is Scott Wu?
The CEO title does not explain the largest founder stake.
Scott Wu is Cognition cofounder and CEO. Forbes estimates Scott Wu net worth at $600M historical (2026-02-02). This is a personal estimate, not company value.
A documented financing history shows company growth; the earlier founder estimate should not be silently rolled forward.

Before Cognition: the official score behind the coding story
The official 2014 IOI results list Scott Wu with a gold medal and 600 points out of 600. He tied for first with Ishraq Huda and Yinzhan Xu. Steven Hao, another Cognition founder, appears sixth with 525 points. This is a dated competition record, not a popularity-based reputation claim.
The financially relevant question is how a technical network becomes a founding team. People who have worked or competed together may already understand one another’s capabilities. That can reduce uncertainty during formation, but it does not determine how equity is allocated. A cap table can reflect capital, timing, vesting or negotiated contributions.
How Cognition describes the software-engineering bet
Cognition’s Series E announcement dates the company’s start to 2024. It describes a strategy in which engineers direct agents and delegate execution. That is the company’s account of its purpose. It does not independently establish that an agent can complete every engineering task reliably.
My read: the relevant unit is completed useful work. A coding demonstration measures a narrower result than maintaining a production system. Customers must consider review effort, incident risk and how the tool operates within existing processes. The business case depends on the value of completed work after those costs.
This also changes what a financial profile should investigate. A fast-growing usage metric may show activity, but monetization and retention remain separate questions. A revenue run-rate can indicate momentum without supplying recognized annual revenue, gross margin or cash generation. We preserve the company’s metric labels.
Cognition: from a solved problem to an engineering business
A competition gives a precise score because the task and scoring rules are defined. A commercial software project usually has less tidy boundaries. The code can compile while failing a customer requirement. Tests can pass while an integration remains fragile. The competition record establishes Wu’s performance under its own rules; it cannot establish the economics of Devin.
My read: the founding team’s technical familiarity is useful when paired with a repeatable delivery process. The relevant questions are who specifies the task, who checks the result, and who remains responsible when an agent makes a mistake. Those responsibilities can determine whether automation saves money after supervision. They also explain why a company needs more than a successful demonstration to build recurring customer demand.
The 2025 financing announcement describes Devin ARR rising from $1 million in September 2024 to $73 million in June 2025. Cognition says this was before acquiring Windsurf. This distinction prevents attributing the earlier increase to an acquired business. ARR remains a company-reported rate, rather than a statement of profits or Wu’s personal income.

Cognition: the capital history is unusually clear
Wu’s September 8, 2025 funding post says Cognition raised over $400 million at $10.2 billion post-money. The September 2026 announcement says it raised over $2 billion at $48 billion. These are corporate financing observations from interested company sources.
My calculation: the two disclosed rounds total more than $2.4 billion. This is a lower bound for those observations, not lifetime capital or cash proceeds to Wu. The word “over” matters. Converting it into an exact $2.4 billion would make the ledger appear more precise than its sources.
The later announcement says run-rate revenue rose from $492 million in May to almost $900 million. I keep “run-rate” and “almost” in the table. I do not turn the observation into audited annual revenue. The financing valuation divided by a run-rate would also be a valuation multiple, not a profit multiple.
Cognition: unequal founder economics remain unexplained
The Forbes Türkiye report says Steven Hao and Walden Yan had larger stakes than Wu at the period it examined. It also says the reason was unknown and the company declined to comment on wealth. That limitation is part of the finding.
The CEO title does not imply the largest shareholding. Leadership responsibility and negotiated ownership are different variables. I do not explain the difference with speculation about who wrote more code, who invested first or who joined earliest. The public source does not establish those causes.
We also do not multiply Wu’s historical estimate by the rise in company valuation. That would assume his percentage, security terms, other assets and the provider’s methodology remained unchanged. The financing record supports a company timeline. It does not support a new personal wealth series.
Cognition’s first $21 million round predates the Windsurf agreement
Wu’s March 12, 2024 Devin launch records a $21 million Series A led by Founders Fund. It also identifies the product’s shell, browser and editor environment. This is the company’s initial product and financing account, not an independent productivity audit.
His July 14, 2025 Windsurf announcement records a signed definitive acquisition agreement. The stated scope includes intellectual property, product, trademark, business and people. It supplies no purchase price. I do not relabel signing as closing or use the purchase to invent Wu’s personal proceeds.
Scott Wu net worth in 2026
The reviewed Forbes Türkiye report, published February 2 and updated February 16, 2026, put Scott Wu net worth near $600 million. It described him as holding the smallest founder stake, without explaining why. Cognition’s September 8, 2026 announcement gives a $48 billion company valuation, not his ownership. I do not update the old personal figure proportionally or replace it with an unsupported current estimate.

Cognition announced a $48 billion company valuation with more than $2 billion raised in September 2026. The announcement does not disclose Wu’s individual stake.
What did Devin’s launch establish?
Cognition’s March 2024 launch introduced its coding-agent product and published company-run performance claims. It documents the commercial proposition; those results need their stated benchmark conditions and are not an independent appraisal.
How I researched Scott Wu
I independently read the two company financing posts and Forbes Türkiye’s founder-wealth reporting. Corporate financing values remain separate from historical personal wealth. I preserve lower-bound financing language and revenue run-rate wording. I do not assign a cause to unequal founder stakes or extrapolate a current estimate.
