Sundar Pichai's disclosed Alphabet shares were worth about $1.04 billion at the October 15, 2026 close, based on the holdings in his latest SEC Form 4 (filed September 29, 2026). Forbes puts his total net worth at $1.6 billion as of October 15, 2026, and the gap between those two numbers is mostly the cash he has raised by selling stock over the past decade.
Most pages that rank for this question quote a round number with no working: $1.1 billion (Bloomberg, July 2025), $1.2 billion (Forbes, July 2025), or "at least $643 million" (GuruFocus). I pulled his filings from SEC EDGAR, priced every share class at a dated close, and checked each published estimate against the filings. Here is the math.
How many Google shares does Sundar Pichai own?
I checked every Form 4 Pichai filed in September 2026 through EDGAR's full-text search. The most recent is the one filed September 29, 2026, covering transactions on September 25, 2026. No later Form 4 for Pichai showed up in EDGAR as of October 16, 2026. That filing reports 3,014,090 Alphabet shares across Class A and Class C, held directly or through two family trusts, plus 199,134 unvested Class C Google Stock Units (GSUs).
I valued each class at its own closing price on Thursday, October 15, 2026, the last full trading day before this check: $349.22 for GOOGL (Class A) and $344.91 for GOOG (Class C), per StockAnalysis daily price history.
| Share class (holder) | Shares | Source | Price (Oct 15, 2026 close) | Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Class A common, direct | 227,560 | Form 4, filed 2026-09-29 | $349.22 | $79.5 million |
| Class C capital stock, direct | 1,675,066 | Form 4, filed 2026-09-29 | $344.91 | $577.7 million |
| Class C, Sundararajan Pichai 2026 Annuity Trust | 555,732 | Form 4, filed 2026-09-29 | $344.91 | $191.7 million |
| Class C, Anjali Pichai 2026 Annuity Trust | 555,732 | Form 4, filed 2026-09-29 | $344.91 | $191.7 million |
| Total owned shares | 3,014,090 | $1,040.6 million | ||
| Unvested Class C GSUs (not yet his) | 199,134 | Form 4, filed 2026-09-29 | $344.91 | $68.7 million |
A few notes on the table, all from the filing footnotes:
- The trusts. The Form 4 says Pichai is "sole trustee and sole annuitant" of the Sundararajan Pichai 2026 Annuity Trust (dated February 23, 2026), and that his spouse is sole trustee and sole annuitant of the Anjali Pichai 2026 Annuity Trust (dated February 18, 2026). Both trusts were set up in February 2026, per the dates in their names. I counted both, since household wealth is what Forbes and Bloomberg measure. If you exclude his wife's trust, the owned stake is about $849 million.
- Class A is the only voting stake. Alphabet's 2026 proxy, with a record date of April 6, 2026, lists Pichai with 227,560 Class A shares, no Class B shares, and less than 1% of voting power. The proxy states that "Non-voting Class C capital stock is not included in the table," which is why the proxy alone understates his position by more than 2.7 million shares.
- Monthly vesting adds shares, taxes take some back. On September 25, 2026, 3,671 GSUs converted into Class C stock, and the filing shows 3,705 units withheld "to satisfy tax obligations" at $339.01. The same pattern appears on August 25, 2026 (3,669 converted, 3,703 withheld at $344.59).
- His last open-market sale was March 18, 2026. That Form 4 shows 32,500 Class C shares sold in five lots at weighted average prices from $306.21 to $310.18, under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan adopted December 2, 2024. At the October 15 close those shares would be worth about $11.2 million. EDGAR's full-text search shows no Form 144 (notice of proposed sale) from Pichai after March 18, 2026.
Why GuruFocus says "at least $643 million"
When I opened GuruFocus's Pichai page on October 16, 2026, it showed "at least $647 million" (the figure moves daily). It counts 1,339,024 GOOGL shares at $349.22 and 520,668 GOOG shares at $344.91, and says its estimate assumes "no transactions after 2026-03-18." Its GOOG count is dated June 5, 2024. Neither share count matches his Form 4: the SEC filings show only 227,560 Class A shares and about 2.79 million Class C shares. I could not reconcile GuruFocus's numbers with the filings, so treat that figure as a stale floor, not a measurement.
How much does Sundar Pichai make a year?
Pichai's base salary is $2 million, and he is not eligible for an annual bonus, per Alphabet's Form 8-K dated March 4, 2026. His reported pay swings wildly because Alphabet gives him one large stock grant every three years instead of an annual award.
The totals below come from the Pay Versus Performance table in Alphabet's 2026 proxy (filed April 24, 2026), which I read in the SEC's XBRL rendering. EDGAR's text tool cut off the full proxy before its Summary Compensation Table, so the column breakdowns are from the secondary sources named in each row.
| Year | Salary | Stock awards | All other comp (incl. security) | Total, per 2026 proxy | Breakdown source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $2,007,692 | None | $8,898,387 | $10,906,079 | gloom.sh summary of 2026 proxy |
| 2024 | about $2.015M | $405,630 | about $8.30M (security $8.27M) | $10,800,694 | The Register (May 2025); CNBC (Apr 2025) |
| 2023 | not verified | not verified | security $6.78M | $8,802,824 | CNBC (Apr 2025) |
| 2022 | $2M | about $218M | security $5.94M | $225,985,145 | Bloomberg via Gulf News (Apr 2023) |
Three things stand out.
Security is most of his non-stock pay. Alphabet spent $8.27 million on Pichai's personal security in 2024, up about 22% from $6.78 million in 2023, according to CNBC's reading of the 2025 proxy. That single line is larger than his salary four times over.
The 2024 total was restated. The 2025 proxy reported $10,725,043 for 2024. The 2026 proxy raised it to $10,800,694, adding $75,651 for personal use of company aircraft that the earlier filing "inadvertently omitted."
2026 will be a grant year. The March 2026 8-K describes his new triennial award: $84 million in time-vesting Alphabet GSUs, two tranches of performance stock units with a target of $63 million each (paying 0% to 200% based on Alphabet's total shareholder return against the S&P 100), plus Waymo units with a target value of about $130 million and Wing units of about $45 million. That is roughly $385 million in target value, all of it unvested and subject to continued employment. The unvested 199,134 GSUs in the table above are part of that grant.
For context, the 2026 proxy (as summarized by gloom.sh) puts the CEO pay ratio at 35:1 against median employee pay of $310,826 for 2025. The same proxy's "compensation actually paid" figure for Pichai in 2025 is $213,903,156, an SEC-defined measure that mostly reflects the rise in value of earlier stock grants, not cash he received. Is Sundar Pichai a billionaire?
Yes, by both major trackers, and by a whisker on the filings alone. Here is how the published figures line up:
| Estimate | Figure | Date | What it counts |
|---|---|---|---|
| My Form 4 math | $1.04 billion | Oct 15, 2026 close | Owned Alphabet shares only, including both trusts |
| Forbes real-time | $1.6 billion | Oct 15, 2026 | Shares plus estimated after-sale cash; Forbes notes he has sold more than $500 million in stock before taxes |
| Bloomberg Billionaires Index | above $1.1 billion | July 25, 2025 | Stake of about $440 million then, with the majority in cash, per Bloomberg |
| GuruFocus | at least $647 million | Oct 16, 2026 | Stale share counts, no cash |
I could not open Bloomberg's live profile (the site blocks automated access), so the Bloomberg number is the July 25, 2025 figure as reported by Gulf News and Business Standard. It is more than a year old, and Alphabet's share price has risen sharply since, so it should not be compared directly with the October 2026 numbers.
Why the estimates differ:
- Sales and cash. Bloomberg reported in July 2025 that Pichai had sold more than $650 million of Alphabet stock over the past decade, and that the shares he sold would have been worth over $2.5 billion had he held them. A tracker that only counts current shares (GuruFocus, or my table) misses that cash entirely. Forbes and Bloomberg add an estimate of it.
- Taxes. Vested stock is taxed as income, and the Form 4s show Alphabet withholding units at every monthly vest to cover those taxes. Anyone estimating his cash pile has to haircut gross sale proceeds for income and capital gains tax, and each publisher makes its own assumptions.
- Unvested awards. The 199,134 unvested GSUs (about $68.7 million at the October 15 close) and the 2026 performance units are not his until they vest. The trackers generally leave them out, and so do I.
- Spending and giving. EDGAR shows Form 144 filings by the Pichai Family Foundation alongside his own from April 2025 to March 2026, meaning the foundation also gave notice of planned Alphabet share sales. Philanthropy, homes and private investments are not public, so every estimate guesses at them.
So the defensible answer is: Pichai's disclosed stock alone is worth roughly $1 billion, and his total wealth is probably higher once after-tax sale proceeds are counted, with Forbes's $1.6 billion the most recent published estimate. For a sense of where that sits, see what it takes to be in the top 1 percent by net worth.
Who is the richest Indian-born CEO?
This depends on who counts, so I limited the comparison to people Forbes currently profiles as working CEOs and whose birthplace I could confirm.
| CEO | Company | Born | Forbes real-time net worth | Forbes date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nikesh Arora | Palo Alto Networks | Ghaziabad, India (Wikipedia) | $1.8 billion | Oct 16, 2026 |
| Sundar Pichai | Alphabet | Chennai, India (American Bazaar) | $1.6 billion | Oct 15, 2026 |
| Satya Nadella | Microsoft | India (Forbes) | $1.4 billion | Oct 13, 2026 |
On these figures, Nikesh Arora edges out Pichai among Indian-born CEOs of large US companies, with Satya Nadella close behind. All three are within a few hundred million dollars of each other, so a few weeks of stock moves can reorder the list.
The name that often tops "Indian-origin CEO" lists is Arista Networks CEO Jayshree Ullal, whom Forbes values at about $7.7 billion as of October 9, 2026. She was born in London and raised in New Delhi, according to her Wikipedia biography, so she is Indian-origin but not Indian-born. Founder-chairmen of Indian conglomerates sit in a different category and are outside this comparison.

What I could not verify
- Bloomberg's current (October 2026) figure for Pichai. Its profile was not reachable, so I cite the July 2025 number with its date.
- The full 2025 Summary Compensation Table footnote, including the exact 2025 security cost. The totals are from the proxy's Pay Versus Performance data; the 2025 salary and "all other" split comes from a third-party summary of the proxy.
- The number of shares behind the 2026 performance units and Waymo and Wing units. The 8-K gives dollar targets only.
- Pichai's cash, real estate and private holdings, which are not public.
