Coca-Cola does not own Monster. It is a large minority shareholder with one seat on the board, and its bottlers distribute Monster drinks around the world. Monster runs itself from Corona, California.

Who owns Monster Energy today?

The largest holders, from Monster's 2026 proxy statement (filed March 27, 2026):

Shareholder Shares Stake Notes
The Coca-Cola Company 204,243,204 20.9% Per its filing of January 28, 2025; nominates one director
Hilton H. Schlosberg 75,575,906 7.7% CEO and vice chairman
Rodney C. Sacks 73,445,410 7.5% Chairman
The Vanguard Group 63,682,206 6.5% Index and mutual funds
Brandon Limited Partnership No. 2 58,773,888 6.0% Sacks and Schlosberg are its general partners
BlackRock 50,718,228 5.2% Index and mutual funds
All directors and officers together 79,753,759 8.1% As of February 13, 2026

Sacks' and Schlosberg's numbers overlap. Both men are counted as owners of the same family partnerships, including the Brandon partnerships, which is why each shows more than 7% but together they control 8.1%, not 15%. Monster had 978.1 million shares outstanding at the end of 2025.

What are those stakes worth?

At MNST's closing price of $46.19 on October 23, 2026 (Yahoo Finance), my own math from the share counts above:

Holder Value at $46.19 a share
Whole company (978.1 million shares) About $45.2 billion
Coca-Cola's 20.9% About $9.4 billion
Sacks and Schlosberg's combined 8.1% About $3.7 billion

These are market values on one day, not net worth figures, and they move with the share price.

Does Coca-Cola own Monster?

Partly. Coca-Cola paid Monster a net $2.15 billion in cash for about 16.7% of the company in a deal that closed on June 12, 2015, per the two companies' joint announcement. In the same deal, the companies swapped brands: Monster took Coca-Cola's energy drinks, including NOS, Full Throttle and Burn, and Coca-Cola took Monster's non-energy drinks, including Hansen's Natural Sodas, Peace Tea and Hubert's Lemonade. Coca-Cola became Monster's preferred distributor worldwide.

Coca-Cola's stake grew to 20.9% without it buying more, because Monster has been buying back and retiring its own shares. At the October 23, 2026 share price, the stake is worth about $9.4 billion, a little more than four times what Coca-Cola paid.

Who founded Monster Energy?

No single founder. The Hansen family business dates to the 1930s, but Monster as it is today was built by Rodney Sacks and Hilton Schlosberg, two South Africans who took control of the company in 1990 and launched the Monster Energy drink in 2002.
