Trader Joe's says almost nothing about its owners. Its website does not discuss them, it files nothing with the SEC, and it does not publish revenue. What is on the record comes from Forbes, which tracks the family, and from German filings and press about the Aldi Nord foundations.

Who owns Trader Joe's today?

Layer Who What is public
Ultimate owners Heirs of Theo Albrecht Sr. (died 2010), the Aldi Nord branch Forbes lists Theo Albrecht Jr.'s source of wealth as "Aldi, Trader Joe's"
Family foundations Markus-Stiftung, Lukas-Stiftung and Jakobus-Stiftung Named by German press as the Aldi Nord family foundations
Holding ALDI Nord Holding Stiftung & Co. KG Registered in the German Bundestag lobby register; owners not listed
Operating company Trader Joe's Private; no public financial reports

Forbes reported in December 2012, when Berthold Albrecht died, that his father Theo Albrecht Sr. bought Trader Joe's in 1979 and that Berthold's main role was overseeing the chain. Forbes' current profile of Theo Albrecht Jr. says he sits on the board of the family foundation and estimated his net worth at $16.4 billion on October 14, 2026.

I could not find a public document that names which Aldi Nord foundation holds the Trader Joe's shares. private banking magazin reported in February 2023 that the family planned to combine Aldi Nord under a holding company in which the Theo Jr. and Berthold branches would each own half. Treat any claim of an exact split as unconfirmed.

Is Trader Joe's owned by Aldi?

Yes and no. Trader Joe's and Aldi share a family, not a company.

  • Aldi Süd (Karl Albrecht's side) owns the Aldi stores in the US. Aldi Süd's own website lists the United States among its countries, "Seit 1976."
  • Aldi Nord (Theo Albrecht's side) runs Aldi stores in northern Germany and other European countries, and the same family branch owns Trader Joe's.

The two Aldi groups have been separate since the founding brothers split the business in 1961. So the Aldi store and the Trader Joe's in your town are competitors with different owners. For the full family tree, see who owns Aldi.

Who founded Trader Joe's?

Joe Coulombe. He opened the first Trader Joe's in Pasadena, California, in 1967, after running a chain of convenience stores called Pronto Markets, according to Fortune and CBS News. He sold the chain to the Albrecht family in 1979 and stayed on as CEO until 1988. Coulombe died at 89 in February 2020.

Forbes' pages disagree on the purchase year: the 2012 article says 1979, while its Theo Albrecht Jr. profile says 1971. I use 1979, which also matches Fortune's and CBS News' accounts of the sale.

Who runs Trader Joe's?

Bryan Palbaum has been chairman and CEO since July 2, 2023, when Dan Bane retired after 22 years in the job, Supermarket News reported. Palbaum had been president and chief operating officer for the previous 10 years. Jon Basalone, previously president of stores, became vice CEO and president. I found no announcement of a later change as of October 25, 2026.

No. You cannot buy Trader Joe's stock. It is owned through the Albrecht family's private structure, and it does not report sales or profits. Any revenue figure you see for Trader Joe's is an outside estimate, not a company number.
