Neither group is listed on a stock exchange, so there are no public shareholder filings to read. To map the structure, I pulled the corporate pages of Aldi US and Aldi Süd, the German Bundestag lobby register entry for the Aldi Nord holding company, the Forbes profiles of the Albrecht heirs, and German business press reporting on the foundations. Where a detail is only reported and not filed, I say so.
The Aldi ownership chart
Here is the structure as I was able to document it. Percentages appear only where a source states them, and they are labeled as estimates when the source does.

├── ALDI Nord group: 5,526 stores in 8 European countries (end of 2025)
└── TRADER JOE'S (US; bought by Theo Albrecht Sr. in 1979)
A few notes on that chart. The Aldi Süd foundation names and roles come from a 2016 analysis by UnternehmerKompositionen, which describes the Siepmann-Stiftung as the top holding of Aldi Süd, named after Karl Albrecht's mother's maiden name, with a stated purpose of preserving and promoting the Aldi Süd group. The same source says that if no descendants of Karl Albrecht remain, the Siepmann-Stiftung's assets pass in equal halves to the Oertl-Stiftung and the Elisen-Stiftung. Aldi Süd does not publish its ownership percentages, so the 75% figure is a press estimate, not a filed number.
The three Aldi Nord foundations, Markus, Lukas and Jakobus, were named by private banking magazin in February 2023, which reported that the family planned to combine the group under a holding in the legal form of a "Stiftung & Co. KG", with the Theo Jr. and Berthold branches each owning half and holding equal votes on a joint supervisory board, pending approval by foundation and tax authorities. An earlier report, in apotheke adhoc (March 7, 2012), named the same three foundations and described the Markus-Stiftung as the most important, with 61% of each of Aldi Nord's regional companies at the time. I checked the German Bundestag lobby register, and an entity called "ALDI Nord Holding Stiftung & Co. KG" is registered there (entry R002241, last changed September 30, 2026). The register entry does not list the holding's owners, so the exact split among the foundations today is not public.
Is Aldi US owned by Aldi Süd or Aldi Nord?
Aldi US is part of Aldi Süd. Aldi Süd's own "ALDI SÜD weltweit" page lists the United States among its countries ("Seit 1976"), alongside Austria, the UK, Ireland, Australia, Switzerland, Slovenia, Hungary, Italy and China. Forbes' profile of Karl Albrecht Jr. explains the history: in the 1961 split, Karl Sr. took the southern German stores plus the rights to the Aldi brand in the UK, Australia and the US.
The Aldi US corporate history page says the Albrecht family founded the world's first discount grocery store in Germany in 1961 and that the first US Aldi opened in Iowa in 1976. The same page says Aldi US has grown to "more than 2,400 stores across 38 states with more than 45,000 employees" (no date given on the page). In a January 12, 2026 press release, Aldi US said it planned to open more than 180 stores across 31 states in 2026, would reach nearly 2,800 stores by the end of 2026, would enter Maine as its 40th state, and is targeting 3,200 stores by 2028.
So the Aldi you shop at in Chicago or Houston is not connected by ownership to the Aldi stores in, say, Belgium or the Netherlands, which are Aldi Nord markets.
Is Trader Joe's still owned by Aldi?
Trader Joe's is owned by the Theo Albrecht side of the family, the Aldi Nord side, not by Aldi Süd and not by Aldi US. Forbes reported in December 2012 that Theo Albrecht Sr. bought Trader Joe's in 1979 and that his son Berthold's main role was overseeing the chain. Forbes' current profile of Theo Albrecht Jr. lists his source of wealth as "Aldi, Trader Joe's" and says he sits on the board of the family foundation.
Two cautions. First, Forbes' own pages disagree on the purchase year: the 2012 article says 1979, while the current Theo Albrecht Jr. profile and a 2014 Forbes obituary of Karl Albrecht say 1971. I use 1979 because it is the date given in Forbes' article about the Trader Joe's heir and is the year most commonly reported. Second, I could not find a public filing that names which foundation holds the Trader Joe's shares. Some German press reports attribute it to the Markus-Stiftung, but Trader Joe's is a private company and its ownership chain is not public. Trader Joe's corporate site does not discuss its owners; its store locator, which I checked on October 16, 2026, lists stores in 42 states plus the District of Columbia.
In practice, Trader Joe's and Aldi US are competitors run by different companies under different family branches.
Are the owners of Aldi and Lidl brothers?
No. This is a common mix-up because both are German discount grocers expanding in the US. Lidl belongs to the Schwarz Group of Neckarsulm, Germany, not to the Albrecht family. The Schwarz Group's corporate site lists Lidl and Kaufland as its retail divisions alongside Schwarz Produktion, PreZero, Schwarz Digits and Schwarz Corporate Solutions, and reports turnover of €185.6 billion and 604,000 employees for fiscal 2025.
The brothers in this story are Karl and Theo Albrecht, and they ran the two halves of Aldi, not Aldi and Lidl.
The 1971 kidnapping of Theo Albrecht
In 1971, Theo Albrecht was kidnapped and held for 17 days in Düsseldorf. The ransom was 7 million Deutschmarks, according to a 2017 report in The Local and a 2014 Forbes obituary of his brother Karl. The Local named the kidnappers as Paul Kron and Heinz Joachim Ollenburg and reported that about half the ransom was never accounted for. Forbes wrote in 2012 that Theo became a recluse after the kidnapping, and the family's notorious privacy dates largely from this period. Theo Albrecht died on July 24, 2010, according to his obituary on Legacy.com.
How rich is the Albrecht family?
Forbes tracks the Albrecht heirs in separate profiles. These are real-time estimates and move daily:
| Heir (Forbes profile) | Family branch | Forbes real-time net worth | As of |
|---|---|---|---|
| Karl Albrecht Jr. & family | Aldi Süd | $17.4 billion | Oct 16, 2026 |
| Beate Heister | Aldi Süd | $17.2 billion | Oct 12, 2026 |
| Theo Albrecht Jr. | Aldi Nord, Trader Joe's | $16.4 billion | Oct 14, 2026 |
Forbes' Karl Albrecht Jr. profile describes him as #146 on its 2026 Billionaires list. The Beate Heister profile carries the same 2026 list rank. On the day I checked, the real-time ranks were #154 for Karl Albrecht Jr. & family and #167 for Theo Albrecht Jr.
Note what these numbers measure. The heirs do not own Aldi shares directly; the foundations do. Forbes' 2014 Karl Albrecht obituary described the arrangement on the Nord side as a family foundation that owns the company, pays dividends to the heirs, and keeps rival family branches from breaking it up. That same split created conflict: private banking magazin reported in February 2023 that the Theo Jr. and Berthold branches were settling a long dispute over control of Aldi Nord by moving to the joint holding structure described above.

How Aldi makes money
Both Aldi groups make money the same basic way: high volume, a limited range of mostly private label products, small stores and low operating costs. Neither group publishes consolidated financial statements the way a listed company does, so revenue figures come from company statements to the press or trade estimates.
Aldi Nord. Aldi Nord reported retail sales of more than €31 billion for fiscal 2025, up 7.4% from the prior year, with 5,526 stores in eight European countries and more than 90,000 employees at the end of 2025, according to Lebensmittel Praxis (April 29, 2026), citing the company. Trader Joe's revenue is not disclosed.
Aldi Süd. Aldi Süd's international page states about 6,520 stores and about 155,000 employees worldwide, without a date, and lists about 2,150 US stores, a figure lower than Aldi US's own newer count, so treat it as out of date. In Germany, trade consultancy DRC Discount Retail Consulting reported on March 12, 2026 that Aldi Süd's German sales rose by about €500 million to €18.8 billion in 2025, from 2,022 stores. I did not find a published group-wide revenue figure from Aldi Süd itself, so I have not included one.
Aldi US. Aldi US does not publish revenue. Its January 2026 release says 17 million new customers visited its stores in 2025 and that one in three US households shopped at Aldi in the past year, based on company data. Expansion is the growth engine: more than 180 openings in 2026 and a target of 3,200 stores by 2028.
Profit at both groups flows up to the foundations, which fund the families and, in the case of the charitable Oertl and Elisen foundations on the Süd side, medical and cultural causes.
