Before Perplexity: what the papers establish before the company
The 2020 CURL paper lists Srinivas alongside Michael Laskin and Pieter Abbeel. It examines learning useful representations from images for reinforcement learning. The record supplies a title, author list and submission date. These are observable research contributions, not a retrospective claim that one person invented an entire field.
The 2021 Decision Transformer paper also lists Srinivas among its authors. It approaches reinforcement learning through sequence modeling. I use the paper to establish authorship and the research direction. I do not translate benchmark results into commercial revenue or a founder’s later ownership.
Forbes records IIT Madras and Berkeley education and earlier research employment. The primary papers add detail that a short employer list cannot provide. They show a technical trajectory before an AI-search business became valuable. That trajectory supports a career profile without requiring invented stories about motivation or private conversations.
Perplexity: the company-building question is distribution
The Forbes profile dates Perplexity’s founding to August 2022 and names its four cofounders. It describes a product that summarizes online material and points readers to sources. That is the operating concept relevant to the financial story.
My read: search requires both an answer users trust and a reason to return. A model’s capabilities are only one input. Distribution, user habits and the economics of serving queries also matter. A company can create a popular interface while paying another provider for part of the underlying intelligence.
The key financial distinction is gross activity versus retained value. More queries can increase use and costs at the same time. To evaluate the business, a reader would want paying-customer retention, revenue per customer and the cost of a typical workload. A company valuation does not disclose those operating figures.
Perplexity: why research papers belong in a financial profile
The CURL paper and Decision Transformer paper establish coauthored research rather than a generic AI credential. They concern learning representations and treating decisions as a sequence-modeling problem. Neither is a Perplexity income statement. Their value here is locating Srinivas’s technical work before interpreting his commercial strategy.
My read: a research background can help a founder evaluate technical possibilities and tradeoffs. A company must decide which possibilities solve a repeated customer problem. Better answers, lower latency and a usable experience can each affect adoption. The cost of providing those answers matters alongside the quality. A research result and a profitable product remain different achievements.
The ownership question does not follow from authorship. Coauthor order cannot establish a founder’s economic percentage. A provider’s total cannot be divided by company value to recover it reliably. Securities can carry different rights, while personal totals can include other assets. Those unknowns keep the financing observation outside the personal chart.
Compare the application-layer business question with Bret Taylor’s Sierra profile. An answer service and a customer-service agent both require useful results, but have different measures of completion. The investigation follows the customer task and serving cost. Ranking founders by fundraising values would lose that distinction.

Perplexity: why the fortune cannot reveal the cap table
A personal wealth provider may incorporate several assets, discounts or assumptions. The financing valuation may relate to a different date and security class. Dividing one headline by the other does not yield a disclosed ownership percentage. We reject that shortcut even when the result looks plausible.
My calculation: $2.1 billion divided by $20 billion is 10.5%. This is an arithmetic ratio of unmatched headline figures, shown to explain the error. It is not a stake estimate and does not appear in the ownership facts. The reviewed records do not establish a current percentage.
That missing input also prevents a reliable mark-to-market exercise against rumored new valuations. A company-level negotiating price would not reveal founder dilution or any shares sold. Even a completed round would require matched ownership data before it could support an independent personal calculation.
Perplexity’s incorporation date and investor chronology answer different questions
Srinivas’ first-anniversary post dates incorporation to August 3, 2022. I treat this as the founder’s dated account, rather than an independently inspected incorporation certificate.
Investor IVP’s portfolio record separately lists founding in 2022 and its partnership in 2024. It names Srinivas, Denis Yarats and Johnny Ho under leadership. That is an interested investor account, not a complete founding register. My read: company formation, leadership composition and a particular investor’s entry belong on separate lines of the history.
Aravind Srinivas net worth in 2026
Forbes estimates Aravind Srinivas net worth at $2.1 billion as of October 12, 2026. It separately identifies Perplexity’s $20 billion valuation in 2025. I do not divide those figures to claim he owns 10.5%: total wealth and a company financing value are different inputs. The reviewed records do not disclose his current equity percentage. The May 2026 Forbes India issue reported $2.1 billion. We show that earlier dated estimate without treating an unchanged rounded total as a daily asset valuation.

I compare dated personal estimates in the table above. Dates identify valuations, report publication, or our source observation, as labeled. Bars are equally spaced observations, not continuous calendar intervals. Figures are nominal USD; private holdings may be illiquid. I do not interpolate gaps, infer founder stakes, or count company funding as personal wealth.
