01 / THE RESEARCH

Before Instacart: eBay strategy, Facebook advertising and HEC Paris

Meta’s historical executive biography dates Simo’s entry to eBay’s strategy team to 2007 and Facebook to 2011. It credits her with work on mobile advertising formats and video products and identifies a Master of Management from HEC Paris, with the final year at UCLA Anderson. I use this interested employer account for career chronology, not proof of personal earnings or current employment.

My read: her documented background connects monetization and product distribution. Those skills help explain the later operating appointments, but they cannot establish a personal fortune. I keep the employer’s claims of impact separate from independently measured revenue attribution.

02 / THE RESEARCH

Before OpenAI: the move was an organizational appointment

OpenAI’s May 7, 2025 announcement named Simo CEO of Applications, reporting to Sam Altman. It described a transition from Instacart and explained how the role fit alongside research and compute responsibilities. This is the company’s account of the appointment, not an independent description of compensation.

A leadership profile should preserve this temporal distinction. An announcement describes a particular moment. It cannot safely stand in for an indefinitely current role. The same problem applies to equity awards: a grant date, vesting date and departure date may imply very different financial positions.

03 / THE RESEARCH

September 2026: Nscale appoints Simo an independent director

Nscale’s September 11, 2026 release announces Simo’s board appointment effective immediately and describes her as a former OpenAI CEO of AGI Deployment who continues as an adviser. This later primary account resolves why the May 2025 Applications appointment should not be presented as an indefinitely current job.

The company identifies a board role, not its compensation or share allocation. I have not inferred either from Nscale’s financing or her title. Board service and an advisory relationship belong in the career timeline; neither becomes a numerical wealth observation.

04 / THE RESEARCH

OpenAI: an equity award is a conditional claim, not a bank balance

The Instacart proxy identifies two departure events and awards forfeited at each. It is more useful than adding grant-date values in a compensation table. A grant can have service or performance conditions. If those are not met, the original disclosed value does not establish an asset still owned.

My read: an executive wealth ledger should distinguish grants, vesting, settlement, retention and disposal. Grant-date fair value is a compensation-accounting observation. Vesting changes the award’s conditions. A sale changes the asset held, but gross proceeds do not establish a current cash balance. Conflating these stages can overstate what remains.

The annual base-salary rate requires similar care. It is a rate, not a promise that twelve months of pay were received. Departure timing and other compensation terms can matter. I do not sum the annual rate with forfeited awards and label the result personal net worth.

Her OpenAI appointment establishes a dated role, not an employment-package value. An agreement or disclosed allocation would be needed for that part of the ledger. The Greg Brockman profile addresses a different observation: a reported statement about a founder stake.

THE RECORD AND MY READ

OpenAI: the proxy supplies a stronger financial trail

The 2026 Instacart proxy says Simo left the CEO role on August 15, 2025. It identifies the unvested portions of performance-based and time-vesting awards as forfeited. It separately says a director award was forfeited after her board departure on November 24.

Those are financially material facts. A granted award can be reported in a compensation table before the recipient has an unconditional right to every share. Continued service and performance requirements matter. A departure can eliminate prospective value that a headline compensation figure appears to assign.

My read: the correct unit is the award’s status, not the compensation headline. To reconstruct retained equity, a researcher must separate vested shares, unvested awards, exercised options and sold holdings. The proxy directly rules out counting some unvested awards as current property.

THE RECORD AND MY READ

Fidji Simo: $1 million salary rate versus $626,923 reported salary

The 2026 Instacart proxy’s compensation table reports $626,923 in salary for Simo in 2025, despite a $1 million annual base-salary rate. Her CEO tenure ended August 15. The reported amount is the relevant annual disclosure; the rate is not a full-year payment.

The same row reports $22,296,487 in total compensation, including $21,562,560 of grant-date stock-award value. Footnote 1 explicitly distinguishes accounting cost from economic value realized. Footnote 11 says unvested executive awards were forfeited at her CEO departure, and the director award at her November 24 board departure. I therefore do not add the compensation headline to retained assets or use it as a net-worth estimate.

THE RECORD AND MY READ

Fidji Simo’s CEO appointment and board chronology do not fully agree

Instacart’s July 8, 2021 appointment release names August 2 as the effective CEO date. It says Simo joined the board in January 2021. The biography beneath her May 2025 transition letter instead says February 2021. I preserve that month-level discrepancy rather than silently choosing a board date.

The May 8, 2025 company statement says she would leave the CEO job for OpenAI Applications while remaining board chair. These are separate positions. A resignation from an executive role does not establish a sale of shares or the value of compensation retained afterward.

THE WEALTH FILE

Fidji Simo net worth in 2026

Fidji Simo net worth cannot be established from the reviewed records. Instacart’s April 9, 2026 proxy reports compensation arrangements and says her unvested executive awards were forfeited after leaving as CEO. A director award was also forfeited when she left the board. Those disclosures prevent treating every historical grant as an asset she still owns. I do not assign a value to undisclosed OpenAI compensation or reconstruct her private portfolio.

Questions about Fidji Simo

What is Fidji Simo’s net worth?

Fidji Simo net worth cannot be established from the reviewed records. Instacart’s April 9, 2026 proxy reports compensation arrangements and says her unvested executive awards were forfeited after leaving as CEO. A director award was also forfeited when she left the board. Those disclosures prevent treating every historical grant as an asset she still owns. I do not assign a value to undisclosed OpenAI compensation or reconstruct her private portfolio.

How much did Instacart’s CEO make?

Simo’s 2025 compensation row reports $626,923 salary and $22,296,487 total, largely grant-date stock-award accounting. It is not a net-worth figure; the proxy also records forfeitures of unvested awards when she left.

How did Fidji Simo make her money?

The documented financial trail includes executive salary and equity awards at Instacart. Vesting, forfeiture, sales, taxes and assets outside the company prevent converting cumulative compensation into a personal balance sheet.

Did Fidji Simo keep her unvested Instacart awards?

The proxy says unvested executive awards were forfeited on her August 15, 2025 CEO departure and the director award on her November 24 board departure. Historical grants cannot all be counted as retained property.

HOW WE RESEARCHED THIS

How I researched Fidji Simo

I independently reviewed OpenAI’s appointment announcement, Instacart’s 2026 proxy and leadership releases, Meta’s historical biography, and Nscale’s September 2026 board announcement. Company biographies and announcements are interested accounts. Salary rates, grant accounting values, vested property and forfeitures are treated separately. I have not reconciled all Form 4 transactions or a complete personal asset-and-liability statement. No compensation sum is presented as a net-worth estimate.
