Palmer Luckey is worth about $6 billion, according to Forbes' real-time billionaires tracker as of October 15, 2026, which ranks him No. 679 in the world. Almost all of that fortune now comes from his stake in Anduril Industries, the defense company he cofounded in 2017 and which investors valued at $61 billion in a $5 billion Series H round announced on May 13, 2026. The Oculus sale to Facebook in 2014 made him rich; Anduril made him a multibillionaire.

I pulled every dated Forbes estimate I could open, from 2016 to this week, and lined each one up against the Anduril funding round closest to it. The pattern is simple: his net worth moves when Anduril raises money at a higher price, and almost never in between.

This is the table no current search result has. Each row is a dated estimate or valuation I opened myself. Where Forbes published no figure for Luckey in a given year, I left the net worth cell as "not published" rather than filling it in.

Oct. 15, 2026 $6 billion (age 34) $61 billion Forbes real-time profile Forbes

Two things stand out. First, between June 2025 and May 2026 his Forbes number barely moved ($3.6 billion to $3.5 billion), because Anduril did not reprice. Second, when Anduril doubled its valuation from $30.5 billion to $61 billion in May 2026, Forbes raised his fortune from $3.5 billion to $5 billion within two days. That is what owning one large private stake looks like on paper.

How did Palmer Luckey become a billionaire?

He did it in two steps.

Step one: Oculus. Luckey founded Oculus VR in 2012 (per Forbes' Dec. 29, 2025 40 Under 40 list) and sold it to Facebook in 2014. I read Facebook's March 25, 2014 press release and the matching Form 8-K filed with the SEC. The terms were:

Oculus deal term Figure Source
Announced March 25, 2014 Facebook press release
Headline value About $2 billion Facebook press release
Cash $400 million Facebook press release; 8-K
Stock 23,071,377 Facebook Class B shares, valued at $1.6 billion 8-K
Share price used $69.35, the 20 trading day average before March 21, 2014 8-K
Earnout Up to $300 million more in cash and stock if milestones were met Facebook press release
Earnout detail Up to $60 million in cash and 3,460,706 shares 8-K
Expected close Second quarter of 2014 Facebook press release; 8-K

Luckey's personal share of that $2 billion has never been disclosed in a filing I could find. The first dated Forbes figure I could open is $700 million, on March 14, 2016, when he was 23. He left Facebook in 2016, according to his Forbes profile.

Step two: Anduril. He cofounded Anduril Industries in 2017 with Trae Stephens, Brian Schimpf, Matt Grimm and Joseph Chen. Forbes was calling him a billionaire by June 2022, when Anduril was valued at $8 billion, and put a number on it ($2.3 billion) in July 2024. Every later jump in his net worth tracks an Anduril round. For the full ownership picture, see our breakdown of who owns Anduril.

How old was Palmer Luckey when he sold Oculus?

He was 21. Luckey was born on September 19, 1992 (per Wikipedia's biography), and Facebook announced the deal on March 25, 2014. Forbes' own ages agree: it listed him at 23 in March 2016, at 33 on the Forbes 400 measured September 4, 2026, and at 34 in October 2026, just after a mid September birthday. That makes him one of the youngest founders ever to sell a company for $2 billion. See where he sits on our list of the youngest billionaires.

What does Anduril make?

Anduril builds autonomous military hardware and the software that ties it together. In plain terms it sells weapons and surveillance systems that can operate with little or no human piloting, mainly to the U.S. Department of Defense and allied governments.

Product or project What it is Source
Lattice AI software that pulls in data from satellites, drones, radar and cameras and coordinates "smart weapons" CBS News, 60 Minutes (May 2025)

Solid rocket motors Expanded production at its Mississippi facility, backed by an additional $43.7 million in Defense Production Act Title III funding (Feb. 19, 2026) Anduril newsroom
Arsenal-1 Planned factory of more than 5 million square feet for autonomous systems production, announced with the Series F Anduril, Aug. 7, 2024

On the money side, TechCrunch reported on May 13, 2026 that Anduril's revenue doubled in 2025 to $2.2 billion, citing a blog post by CEO Brian Schimpf. At the Series H price of $61 billion, investors paid roughly 28 times that 2025 revenue. Anduril is private, so there are no audited public financials; the $2.2 billion is the company's own figure as reported.

Series H May 13, 2026 $5 billion $61 billion Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz Anduril; Gunderson Dettmer; TechCrunch

TechCrunch also cited Tracxn data that Anduril has raised more than $11 billion in total as of May 2026.

How much of Anduril does Palmer Luckey own?

His exact stake is not public. Anduril is a private company and does not disclose its cap table, and none of the Forbes articles I opened (May 2026, June 2025, December 2025, September 2026) states a percentage for Luckey. Forbes says his fortune is "mainly thanks to Anduril" (Sept. 15, 2026), and the way his number doubled with Anduril's valuation in May 2026 confirms the stake is his dominant asset.

What Forbes has published is the stake of two of his cofounders, which gives useful context:

Cofounder Reported stake Forbes net worth Date Source
Palmer Luckey Not disclosed $5 billion May 15, 2026 Forbes
Trae Stephens (executive chairman) More than 3% Became a billionaire June 10, 2025 Forbes
Trae Stephens Not stated $1.8 billion May 15, 2026 Forbes
Brian Schimpf (CEO) Over 2% $1.5 billion May 15, 2026 Forbes

Luckey's net worth is more than three times Stephens' and Schimpf's, which tells you he holds the largest founder stake of the three. I am not going to convert that into a percentage, because Forbes applies private company discounts and counts other assets (cash from Oculus, real estate) that it does not itemize. Any site quoting a precise "Luckey owns X% of Anduril" figure is guessing unless it cites a filing.

Luckey is also reportedly working on a banking startup called Erebor, according to Forbes' Dec. 29, 2025 list. No valuation or stake for him in Erebor appears in the sources I opened, so it is not counted here. For another young founder whose fortune is mostly private stakes, see our Daniel Gross net worth breakdown.

Is Palmer Luckey married?

Yes. Luckey is married to Nicole Edelmann, his partner since they were 15, according to Tablet Magazine's 2024 profile and his Wikipedia biography (which dates the wedding to 2019); note that Forbes' profile still lists his marital status as "Single" as of October 15, 2026.

Why does Palmer Luckey wear Hawaiian shirts?

In his own words, quoted by OfficeChai in December 2025 from an Anduril post on X, his father was a car salesman who wore Hawaiian shirts on his one day off, so "my entire wardrobe through my teenage years was all my dad's Hawaiian shirts," and he keeps wearing them to "remember where I come from."

Where does Luckey rank among billionaires?

On the 2026 Forbes 400 (net worths as of September 4, 2026), Luckey debuted at No. 287 with $5.9 billion. He was one of 34 newcomers and the second youngest member of the list. The cutoff to make the 2026 Forbes 400 was a record $4.4 billion, so his May 2026 jump from $3.5 billion to $5 billion is what carried him over the line. He lives in Newport Beach, which puts him in California's billionaire count; see how many billionaires live in each state.

How I checked these numbers

I opened Forbes' real-time profile for Luckey on October 16, 2026 and recorded the October 15, 2026 figure it displayed. I then opened each dated Forbes list and article that gave him a number, Facebook's 2014 press release and SEC Form 8-K for the Oculus terms, Anduril's own newsroom pages for round dates and amounts, and reporting from Reuters, TechCrunch, the LA Times, Washington Technology, the Orange County Business Journal and Gunderson Dettmer (Anduril's counsel on the Series H) for valuations. Anduril's newsroom pages did not render their full text for me, so I took round dates and amounts from them and valuations from the reporting listed. I did not find a public filing that states Luckey's Anduril ownership or his personal proceeds from the Oculus sale, so neither figure appears in this article.
