Key takeaways
- August 2025: a $500M round priced standalone Cohere at $6.8B.
- September 16, 2026: the definitive combination agreement still required regulatory approval.
- Around $20B is a reported combined-company value, not a disclosed completed standalone round.
- March 2025: Canada finalized support of up to C$240M for a C$725M compute project.
What changed in 2026
I read the September definitive-agreement announcement alongside the April planned-partnership release. They describe successive milestones. The later announcement still makes completion conditional, rather than declaring the merger closed.
Reuters’ September account dates the approximately $20B combined value to the earlier plan and says updated financial terms were not disclosed. I preserve that qualification. A combined business benchmark should not replace the last priced standalone round without explanation.
Who owns Cohere?
The last reviewed standalone investor release names Radical and Inovia as leads and identifies institutional and strategic participants. It does not disclose the complete current shareholder register or each fund’s economic and voting interest.
The future cap table raises another set of questions: exchange ratio, capital contributed, classes issued, participating holders and control rights. A dual-headquarters plan cannot answer those questions. Geographic presence and a sovereignty strategy are not percentages of equity.

Does Canadian compute funding make Cohere government-owned?
The Canadian government release identifies project support and Cohere Inc. It does not disclose a share percentage acquired by the government. I do not convert a public funding commitment into state equity ownership.
The ceiling of support and the total project budget also have different meanings. Their ratio describes public support relative to a stated project size, not the percentage of the corporate share capital owned by Canada.
For the same reason, infrastructure anchored by a company does not necessarily sit entirely within that company’s corporate ownership. Ownership of project assets, provision of compute capacity and ownership of the AI developer require separate records.
The merger needs an exchange ratio, not a borrowed $20 billion stake map
The September 2025 second-close announcement updates the earlier $6.8B financing benchmark to approximately $7B. It adds $100M to the $500M first close and identifies additional participants including BDC and Nexxus. I count this as two closes of one financing round, rather than two unrelated rounds that could inflate the funding history.
The proposed combination changes the question from who owns standalone Cohere to who will own the resulting group. An exchange ratio would tell us how old shares map into new shares. New money could change that split again. Neither a combined headline valuation nor a prospective investor’s cheque supplies the final allocation without the transaction’s share counts and classes.
This is why the reported approximately $20B combined figure stays outside the standalone chart. It concerns a larger corporate perimeter and proposed terms. Comparing it directly with the $7B financing value would imply that the original Cohere shares experienced that entire increase, even though an additional business and possible new capital are involved.
The government funding follows a separate trail. The Canadian investment announcement describes support for a larger project. A funding commitment is not automatically an ordinary-equity subscription. I would need the executed instrument and ownership disclosures before assigning the Canadian government a shareholding percentage or adding its support to a venture-capital round.
I will update the ownership answer when approval and closing are confirmed. The post-closing release should identify the resulting legal structure, effective leadership appointments and any disclosed holdings. Until then, a proposed executive title stays conditional and the reader gets the current private ownership answer alongside a clearly labelled account of the pending transaction.
How the founders built Cohere
The current company team page identifies Aidan Gomez as cofounder and CEO, alongside cofounders Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang. Those biographies establish who built the business, while the merger agreement supplies the conditional future management structure. Neither discloses each founder’s shareholding.
Aidan Gomez is identified as cofounder and CEO in the company agreement. Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang are part of the founding-team research, but direct contemporary biographies and individual holdings need confirmation before personal wealth profiles are linked.
The post-merger leadership plan is explicit about timing. Ilhan Scheer and Samuel Weinbach are named for future roles contingent on completion. I keep those conditional titles separate from the person currently running Cohere, rather than reporting proposed appointments as already effective.
Funding and valuation history
The standalone funding value belongs to Cohere before the proposed combination. A larger combined entity has a different perimeter. Comparing the two as though the second were an appreciation of precisely the same business would overstate what the numbers establish.
The government support is in Canadian dollars; standalone financing is expressed in US dollars. I retain the currencies instead of combining nominal amounts into a single capital-raised total. Project support, equity and a merger exchange should retain distinct labels.
To calculate a founder’s interest after completion, I would need the actual exchange mechanics and any new issuance. Neither the reported combined value nor the headline public-support amount supplies those inputs. Until the terms are available, blank percentages are more informative than estimates with unsupported precision.
| Date / event | Amount | Valuation | Lead / counterparty | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2025-09-24 2025 financing: final disclosed second close | $500M first close + $100M second close | Approximately $7B | Radical Ventures; Inovia | Cohere disclosed |
| 2026-04-24 Planned combination | Exchange and capital terms incomplete | Around $20B combined, reported | Cohere; Aleph Alpha | www.investing.com reported |
| 2026-09-16 Definitive agreement | Updated financial terms not disclosed | Not a new priced standalone round | Cohere; Aleph Alpha | cohere.com disclosed |
A valuation trend would require at least two comparable priced rounds with exact values. The table preserves the available evidence without manufacturing a chart.
I consolidate the August and September 2025 closes into one approximately $7B financing observation. The proposed combined-company figure has a different perimeter and is not a second comparable standalone point.

The new leadership roles become effective on close
I checked the appointment language as a second test of transaction status. The company ties the proposed operating and research leadership roles to completion. That confirms the difference between signing a definitive agreement and running an already merged entity.
My read: a current ownership table should not silently import future management, geographic or investor arrangements. A proposed structure can be described, but its effective date and remaining approvals belong beside it.
The useful next record is a completion notice and the final exchange terms. Without them, an ownership article should explain the conditional chain rather than issue a confident percentage for the combined company.

Can you buy Cohere stock? What about an IPO?
No public Cohere ticker or verified IPO date is established in this review. The merger is a corporate combination, not automatically a listing. A private company can expand through acquisitions or combinations while its shares remain private.
The industrial-investor comparison is Mistral AI’s ownership file, where a dated disclosed stake requires a later-round refresh. Infrastructure readers can also compare Crusoe’s financing history. The AI companies index helps keep a company value distinct from an infrastructure project or operating metric.
The buyer’s disclosure in who owns Groq illustrates why deal size alone cannot establish corporate ownership. Who owns Anthropic supplies another AI ownership comparison, where strategic relationships also need to be distinguished from shares and control.
Frequently asked questions
Who owns Cohere?
Cohere is a private company with founders and institutional and strategic investors. The last verified standalone financing identifies leads and participants, not full current percentages. The proposed Aleph Alpha combination introduces future ownership questions that require final exchange and completion records.
Has Cohere acquired Aleph Alpha?
The reviewed September agreement is definitive but remains subject to regulatory approval. Signing and closing are different events. Proposed leadership appointments are also tied to close, so this article does not report the final combined ownership allocation as already effective.
Does Canada own Cohere?
Canada’s project-support announcement does not disclose a government share percentage. Financial support for domestic compute capacity should not be converted into a corporate equity stake. It establishes an institutional funding relationship with a defined project, not a published complete state ownership claim.
Does Cohere trade on the TSX?
No publicly listed Cohere share is established by this review. Private securities or indirect vehicles need their own issuer, class and eligibility checks. A pending merger does not automatically provide retail access or a verified IPO date. The source date matters.
Who is the CEO of Cohere?
Aidan Gomez is identified as cofounder and CEO in Cohere’s definitive-agreement announcement. Proposed leadership positions tied to the Aleph Alpha combination become effective on completion. I keep that condition visible, rather than describing the companies as already merged or assigning the future executives current roles in a completed group.
What does Cohere sell?
Cohere develops enterprise AI models and applications, including its Command models and North platform. Its company disclosures emphasize business and government deployments with control over data. Product customers and infrastructure partners are separate from equity owners; a deployment relationship alone does not establish a shareholder or corporate parent.
What I am watching next
Later 2026: check the expected completion against an actual approval and closing notice; the company’s expectation is not a guarantee.
On completion: refresh owners, exchange terms, executive titles and legal entities together.
Next funding disclosure: classify government project support separately from corporate equity and retain currencies.
Our independent research methodology
I compared two company combination announcements, standalone funding, the Canadian government record and Reuters’ dated account. Our research method distinguishes signing, closing, project support and equity. I did not obtain the merger exchange schedule, confidential cap tables or a government equity agreement.
